Uncover Unique Blog Ideas For Your Business With These 6 Tools

Apr 3, 2020

When you’re trying to think of unique blog ideas for your business, it can feel like you’re out digging for dinosaur bones. You know they’re in the ground somewhere, but you’re not sure where to start or even what shovel to use. Coming up with blog topics doesn’t have to be this hard; you just need the right tools.

Keep reading to learn about a few internal tools that you might already use and some external tools that you can start using today to uncover the best blog ideas for your business.

Internal Tools

Email

Most people use their email client as a message container, and though it may irk your IT department, this resource can be a boon for coming up with blog topic ideas. Start by searching through your emails for a specific keyword or client (especially if they often ask for help).

A few easy keywords to start with are “help,” “question,” and “idea.” In both Outlook and Gmail, if you search for these words, you should receive a list of every email with them in it. Read through these messages to find topic ideas.

CRM or Helpdesk Software

If your company properly uses a CRM (i.e., Hubspot, Salesforce, Zoho) or helpdesk system (i.e., Zendesk, Freshdesk), you have a wealth of information at your fingertips. Similar to an email client, these systems capture client information and messages, but unlike Gmail or Outlook, they are much more organized and offer advanced searching options.

Social Media

Are your customers messaging you on social media or commenting on your posts? Depending on their responses, these messages may provide you with article ideas. You can also use social media to research topics to write. For example, if you run a company page on LinkedIn, they have a great tool called “Content Suggestions” that provides you with trending industry content for the last 15 days. Using this tool, you can filter the articles that appear by topic, industry, location, job function, and seniority.

On the Quora website, you can search for a specific topic, such as “industrial filtration” and view all of the related questions. Try sorting your search results by time to find the most relevant topic ideas.

In case you were wondering, the top result was “What is the industrial application for filtration?

Google Trends

The power of Google Trends when it comes to generating blog ideas is the ability to see how a term is trending over time. Within the platform, you can search for a word or phrase, and Google will tell you by region how popular it is and whether it is trending or not. You can also compare terms in Google Trends and view related terms and search queries.

One way that you can benefit from using the comparison tool is to determine what word or phrase people use most often. At Fable Heart Media, when we were deciding what to name our blog about creating customer profiles, we landed on “customer profile” over the term “customer persona” because of the results on Google Trends.
